Wonderful to be part of the Inner West Council grants event. Such an amazing array of very deserved recipients this year of which the Edmund Rice Centre was one.


ADDRESS BY DAME MEG TAYLOR

You are warmly invited to join us online for an address by Dame Meg Taylor DBE, former Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum and current member of the Pacific Elders' Voice, on Friday 8 December at 12pm AEDT. Dame Meg Taylor is a Papua New Guinean lawyer and diplomat and was the PNG Ambassador to the US, Mexico and Canada from 1989 to 1994. In 2014, Dame Meg was appointed Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum, a position which she held until 2021. There are few Pacific Islander leaders better placed than Dame Meg to talk about the challenges and opportunities facing the region. We are honoured that Dame Meg will be spending some time at the Centre with us and look very much forward to her address on Emerging Priorities in the Pacific. The world needs more Talanoa

Have you heard about the millenia-old, Pacific Islander tradition of dialogue known as Talanoa? Two days ago, we brought this tradition of deep listening and consensus building for the first time right into our Balmain office and it was magical. Gathered around the sacred circle demarked by the Fala ('mat' in Tongan), our Talanoa brought together Australian National University students with Professor Katerina Teaiwa, Kabikabi/Gurang-Gurang man Ray Minniecon, PhD student Talei Mangioni and Rabi Island climate activist Rae Bainteiti. What ensued was a deep exchange of thoughts, feelings, knowledge and wisdom around the complex issue of climate justice.

Fair Play: Exploring the Interaction between Sport, Social Justice and Human Rights Event for Schools

On Thursday 16th November, the Edmund Rice Centre for Justice and Community Education hosted the 'Fair Play: Exploring the Interaction between Sport, Social Justice and Human Rights Event for Schools' at Santa Sabina College, Strathfield. This event saw 250 students from Years 8 ,9 ,10 and 11 from a range of EREA (Edmund Rice Education Australia) and other partner schools gathered to explore the ways in which sport, social justice and human rights are connected. Read feedbacks from MacKillop Catholic CollegeSt Pius X College ChatswoodMonte Sant' Angelo Mercy College and Santa Sabina College. Former Australian Football Captain, lawyer, broadcaster and social justice advocate Craig Foster AM got the day underway as he shared some of his experiences. He reminded us of the fact that we all have power that we can use to act for justice.
